In the corner of the pavilion, where departed members have their varoius memorials, there is a glass fronted case which contains an ancient Steep cap. A scribbled note attached with a pin records that it belonged to "The Boss" who died in 1990. "The Boss" was Lennie Newman who was a key club member and who served on the committee both before and after the war for a total not far short of 50 years. As well as his cricket he was well known at The Harrow as a regular member of the Tuesday night domino school.
For much of his working life Len worked on the sports grounds at Churchers College, and it was his custom, after a hard days work, to cycle to the Steep ground where he spent another two or three hours cutting the outfield with the old 30" Dennis that was only recently sent to the scrapyard. For special matches he would mow stripes, emptying the hopper of grass at the end of each swaythe. When he did this it took him about five hours but he never complained and only asked that the ground should look as good as he could make it, after all, he remembered the days when home matches could not be played until the last hay crop had been cut and the cow pats shovelled from the square.
